Polyurethane

1. What is polyurethane?

Polyurethane, also referred to as PU is a synthetic, foamed material that is made up of two components: polyol and isocyanate. They are mixed at a temperature of approximately 50°C in order to eventually form a polymer with air bubbles.
The combination of both a soft and a hard component forms the basis for PU's double properties: flexible as well as strong and durable.

2. How are Bekina boots made?

Polyurethane boots are made through injection on a carousel. A conical screw injects the material into a mould.
The production of polyurethane boots is quite complex and delicate. In order to obtain a foamed polyurethane, several chemical reactions occur at the same time a few seconds apart. Several factors determine the success of the chemical reaction:

  • the right choice of components
  • the correct dose and temperature
  • the carousel's rotation speed
  • ...

That is why Bekina is proud to be one of the few companies in the world to have mastered this high-tech process.
